Polarity testing: dead and live methods
Inspection Testing · Lesson 26 · Advanced
Purpose
Verify polarity through dead continuity and justified live confirmation across switches, protective devices and accessories.
Learning objectives
- Use the current required method
- Separate field verification from type testing
- Prove polarity through the complete path
- Compare fault current with every affected rating
Correct polarity ensures single-pole devices interrupt line conductors, Edison-screw outer contacts are not live where relevant, and line/neutral/earth reach the intended terminals.
Core theory
During dead testing, link/trace conductors from origin and operate switches to prove every single-pole protective/control device is in line. Confirm ring and radial accessory connections and multiway switching states.
After all dead tests and safe restoration, confirm supply polarity and final live polarity where needed using suitable two-pole equipment and controlled access; a plug-in indicator has limited diagnostic scope.
Electronic switching, borrowed neutrals, generators/inverters and multi-source transfer arrangements need state-by-state verification. Correct color alone is not proof of conductor function.
| Term | Meaning | Symbol | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polarity | Correct assignment of line, neutral and protective conductors | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Single-pole device | Device intended to interrupt one conductor, normally line | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Borrowed neutral | Neutral shared incorrectly between circuits | Not applicable | Not applicable |
Assumptions: Supplied readings and criteria are fictional evidence; Current edition and exact equipment data remain governing.
- Hazard: The lamp can appear off while line remains at working parts.
- Correct: Rewire the single-pole switch into line and verify terminals/conductor identity.
- Repeat: Repeat polarity, continuity, IR and functional checks affected by correction.
The polarity is incorrect and must be corrected before service.
Reasonableness check: The decision distinguishes the measured quantity, protective function and equipment rating instead of treating one tester result as a complete certificate.
- Applying obsolete half-rated/5× rules as universal requirements
- Selecting an RCD type from trip time alone
- Checking PFC only against the final-circuit breaker
Where this appears in practice
RCD, polarity and PFC verification confirms correct conductor/device operation and that installed equipment can safely interrupt credible faults.
Knowledge check
Does an OFF lamp prove its lampholder is not connected to line?
No. Prove polarity and isolate before access.
Answer: No. Prove polarity and isolate before access.
Practical exercise
Trace polarity through a two-way lighting circuit, switched fused connection unit and changeover supply.
Summary
- Current field RCD testing is intentionally simplified
- Polarity requires both topology and final confirmation
- PFC is a worst-case rating and coordination check
