RCD trip time testing at 1× and 5× rated current
Inspection Testing · Lesson 22 · Advanced
Purpose
Correct the obsolete assumption that every additional-protection RCD needs a 5× field test.
Learning objectives
- Use the current required method
- Separate field verification from type testing
- Prove polarity through the complete path
- Compare fault current with every affected rating
Earlier BS 7671 practice commonly tested non-delay RCDs at 5×IΔn against 40 ms. Since Amendment 2:2022, BS 7671 no longer universally requires a test at five times rated residual current.
Core theory
Use the current rated-current AC test and applicable 300 ms or S-type window. Do not fail a current installation merely because an optional 5× test was not performed.
If 5× is used for fault finding, legacy comparison, manufacturer instruction or a specific other requirement, record waveform/type/phase and the correct expected limit for that context.
Repeated high-current tests can interrupt equipment and are not a substitute for verifying test button, correct type, neutral routing, selectivity, earth-fault protection and notices.
| Term | Meaning | Symbol | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5× test | Test at five times rated residual current | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Phase angle | Selected point on AC waveform at which test begins | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Field verification | Installation test distinct from laboratory product type testing | Not applicable | Not applicable |
Assumptions: Supplied readings and criteria are fictional evidence; Current edition and exact equipment data remain governing.
- Edition: Confirm the applicable current BS 7671/GN3 procedure.
- Evidence: The required rated-current test is present.
- Decision: Do not invent a missing universal 5× requirement; assess all other applicable evidence.
Absence of an optional 5× result is not itself a current compliance failure.
Reasonableness check: The decision distinguishes the measured quantity, protective function and equipment rating instead of treating one tester result as a complete certificate.
- Applying obsolete half-rated/5× rules as universal requirements
- Selecting an RCD type from trip time alone
- Checking PFC only against the final-circuit breaker
Where this appears in practice
RCD, polarity and PFC verification confirms correct conductor/device operation and that installed equipment can safely interrupt credible faults.
Knowledge check
Does a fast 5× result compensate for failure at the required rated-current test?
No. The required test must pass; optional evidence cannot replace it.
Answer: No. The required test must pass; optional evidence cannot replace it.
Practical exercise
Review mixed legacy/current RCD schedules and identify valid omissions, wrong limits and useful diagnostics.
Summary
- Current field RCD testing is intentionally simplified
- Polarity requires both topology and final confirmation
- PFC is a worst-case rating and coordination check
