RCD tripping current tests: half-rated and rated
Inspection Testing · Lesson 21 · Advanced
Purpose
Explain current rated-current RCD verification and place ½×, ramp and other tests in their correct diagnostic context.
Learning objectives
- Use the current required method
- Separate field verification from type testing
- Prove polarity through the complete path
- Compare fault current with every affected rating
Current BS 7671 field verification uses an AC test at rated residual operating current IΔn for compliance, regardless of RCD type, under the stated conditions. Older routines commonly included ½× non-trip and ramp tests, but these are no longer universal requirements.
Core theory
Identify device standard, type AC/A/F/B, IΔn, delay/selective marking, poles, supply and protective purpose. Test the device at the safest suitable downstream point using the current required setting.
For a general non-delay device, current guidance uses operation within 300 ms at 1× IΔn AC. Selective S-type behavior has both minimum and maximum timing boundaries and is not used for additional protection.
½×, ramp, phase-angle and type-specific tests can assist diagnosis or meet manufacturer/other requirements, but understand tester waveform and expected product-standard behavior before interpreting them.
| Term | Meaning | Symbol | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| IΔn | Rated residual operating current | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Ramp test | Diagnostic test increasing residual current to indicated operation | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| S type | Time-delayed selective RCD | Not applicable | Not applicable |
Assumptions: Supplied readings and criteria are fictional evidence; Current edition and exact equipment data remain governing.
- Method: Rated-current AC test at 1×IΔn is the supplied compliance method.
- Compare: 186 ms is within the supplied 300 ms maximum.
- Boundary: This verifies operation, not correct RCD type selection, wiring, fault rating or product type test.
The supplied field operation-time criterion passes; full selection and installation evidence remains.
Reasonableness check: The decision distinguishes the measured quantity, protective function and equipment rating instead of treating one tester result as a complete certificate.
- Applying obsolete half-rated/5× rules as universal requirements
- Selecting an RCD type from trip time alone
- Checking PFC only against the final-circuit breaker
Where this appears in practice
RCD, polarity and PFC verification confirms correct conductor/device operation and that installed equipment can safely interrupt credible faults.
Knowledge check
Is a ½× non-trip test universally required by current BS 7671 field verification?
No. It may be diagnostic, but current compliance verification centers on the rated-current AC test.
Answer: No. It may be diagnostic, but current compliance verification centers on the rated-current AC test.
Practical exercise
Create a required-versus-diagnostic test matrix for general, S-type and equipment-integrated RCDs.
Summary
- Current field RCD testing is intentionally simplified
- Polarity requires both topology and final confirmation
- PFC is a worst-case rating and coordination check
