Earth electrode installation for TT
Domestic Wiring · Lesson 20 · Beginner
Purpose
Describe a TT earth-electrode design and verification workflow without reducing it to a universal rod length or resistance target.
Learning objectives
- Explain electrode function
- Relate RA and RCD operation conceptually
- Identify installation hazards
- Plan measurement and documentation
A TT electrode connects the installation protective system to earth. Its design must provide a stable, testable connection while coordinating with residual-current protection and site conditions.
Core theory
Electrode type, number, spacing, depth, soil resistivity, seasonal variation, corrosion, mechanical protection, and buried services affect performance and durability.
The design relationship RA × IΔn must limit touch voltage to the applicable value, but a calculated maximum is not a good-practice target and current guidance may require a substantially lower, stable measured resistance.
The electrode connection needs an accessible inspection/test arrangement, suitable clamps and conductor protection, warning/identification, and separation from services and other earthing systems as required.
| Term | Meaning | Symbol | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth electrode | Conductive part in electrical contact with Earth | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Electrode resistance | Resistance of electrode and its connection to Earth | RA | Ω |
| Residual operating current | Declared RCD operating-current value | IΔn | A |
RA × IΔn ≤ applicable touch-voltage limitA coordination ceiling, not a preferred electrode target; use current requirements and measured site data.
Ω × A = VAssumptions: No site data.
- Relationship: The protective relationship can be stated symbolically.
- Missing evidence: RA, RCD characteristics, selectivity, seasonal stability, and installation conditions are unknown.
- Conclusion: No electrode installation can be approved from RCD rating alone.
Only the required coordination workflow is known; site measurement and complete protection checks remain essential.
Reasonableness check: RCD rating cannot reveal the physical electrode's resistance or reliability.
- Treating 200 Ω as an automatic pass target
- Driving a rod without service detection
- Testing without accounting for parallel earth paths
Where this appears in practice
TT design appears in rural supplies, conversions, outbuildings, generators, and installations where a distributor earth is unavailable or unsuitable.
Knowledge check
Why is a universal rod length not a valid design rule?
Soil, electrode geometry, seasonal conditions, and required protection vary. Measure and verify the completed site-specific system.
Answer: Soil, electrode geometry, seasonal conditions, and required protection vary. Measure and verify the completed site-specific system.
Practical exercise
Prepare a TT electrode risk assessment and test-record template; leave site-dependent values blank.
Summary
- Electrodes are site-specific
- Coordinate RA with protective devices
- Install, measure, and document safely
