Dimmer circuits and LED compatibility

Domestic Wiring · Lesson 15 · Beginner

BeginnerReview: professional review pending

Purpose

Assess an LED dimming combination using declared lamp, driver, dimmer, load-range, and installation compatibility.

Before you beginLighting switching · Electronic loads

Learning objectives

  • Separate lamp, driver, and dimmer roles
  • Check minimum and maximum loading
  • Recognise leading/trailing-edge compatibility
  • Diagnose symptoms without unsafe substitution

LED power is low, but compatibility is not automatic. Electronic drivers and dimmers interact through waveform, minimum load, inrush, leakage, and control method.

Core theory

A dimmable label on a lamp or driver does not prove compatibility with every dimmer; use the manufacturers' tested compatibility data and allowed load range.

Too little compatible load can cause flicker, dropout, glow when off, or unstable starting; excessive inrush or unsuitable control can damage devices or cause unwanted operation.

Neutral requirements, derating in multi-gang boxes, heat dissipation, protective-device/RCD type, and fire performance of recessed fittings remain separate design checks.

Worked exampleFour 5 W LED lamps are proposed on a dimmer declared for 10–100 W compatible LED load, and the lamp maker lists that dimmer family.

Assumptions: 20 W total; No additional derating required.

  1. Range: 20 W lies inside the declared 10–100 W LED range.
  2. Compatibility: The lamp maker's list provides product-specific evidence.
  3. Remaining checks: Confirm quantity limits, inrush, enclosure derating, wiring needs, and installation instructions.

The combination passes two screening checks but still needs all declared installation checks.

Reasonableness check: Rated watts alone do not describe electronic inrush or control behaviour.

Common mistakes
  • Using an incandescent wattage range for LEDs
  • Assuming every LED is dimmable
  • Adding a random load to cure flicker

Where this appears in practice

Compatibility checks prevent unstable domestic dimming, overheating, premature failure, and nuisance operation.

SafetyDo not experiment on energised wiring or bypass protective components. Damaged, scorched, or incompatible equipment must be isolated and replaced with declared-compatible products.
Local code checkThis lesson uses UK lighting-circuit conventions. Verify the current BS 7671 edition and amendments, equipment standards, manufacturer instructions, fire-separation requirements, Approved Document P applicability, and local notification rules before design or work.

Knowledge check

Does a lamp marked dimmable work with every dimmer?

No. The specific lamp/driver and dimmer combination and load range must be compatible.

Answer: No. The specific lamp/driver and dimmer combination and load range must be compatible.

Practical exercise

Compare two published dimmer data sheets against a fictional six-lamp schedule and list evidence still missing.

Summary

  • Dimmable is not universal compatibility
  • Use LED-specific load data
  • Heat, inrush, and wiring requirements also matter
