Intermediate switching for long runs

Domestic Wiring · Lesson 14 · Beginner

BeginnerReview: professional review pending

Purpose

Insert an intermediate switch between two two-way switches and trace its straight-through and crossed states.

Before you beginTwo-way switching · Strapper conductors

Learning objectives

  • Place the intermediate device correctly
  • Trace straight and crossed paths
  • Extend control beyond two locations
  • Recognise four-terminal identification needs

Control from three or more positions uses two end changeover switches with one or more intermediate crossover switches between their strappers.

Core theory

An intermediate switch operates two linked poles: one state connects strapper pairs straight through and the other crosses them.

It belongs only in the strapper section; the end switches retain the common connections to permanent and switched line.

Additional intermediate switches repeat the crossover function, but conductor count, enclosure capacity, voltage drop, CPC continuity, and identification still require design.

CrossedThe two strapper paths exchange outputsNot applicableNot applicable
Worked exampleThe two end switches currently form a complete path. What happens when the intermediate switch changes state?

Assumptions: One intermediate device; No faults.

  1. Initial: One continuous strapper route joins the selected end contacts.
  2. Change: The intermediate crosses instead of passing straight, or vice versa.
  3. Outcome: Continuity transfers to the other end selection, toggling the lamp.

Changing the intermediate state toggles the load without moving either end switch.

Reasonableness check: One crossover operation reverses which strapper input reaches each output.

Common mistakes
  • Putting permanent line on an intermediate terminal
  • Using a two-way device as an intermediate
  • Pairing conductors by colour rather than test and diagram

Where this appears in practice

Intermediate switching serves long corridors, landings, and rooms with three or more access points.

SafetyComplex switch wiring increases the chance of misidentification. Dead testing, labelling, enclosure checks, and complete verification are essential after alteration.
Local code checkThis lesson uses UK lighting-circuit conventions. Verify the current BS 7671 edition and amendments, equipment standards, manufacturer instructions, fire-separation requirements, Approved Document P applicability, and local notification rules before design or work.

Knowledge check

Where is an intermediate switch placed?

Between the two end switches in the strapper paths. The end commons remain at the two-way switches.

Answer: Between the two end switches in the strapper paths. The end commons remain at the two-way switches.

Practical exercise

Draw straight and crossed internal contacts, then trace one complete path through a three-position switching circuit.

Summary

  • Intermediate devices cross two strappers
  • End devices remain changeovers
  • More positions need repeat crossover stages
